Support Available to New Students is Highest Ever

Figures released by the Student Loans Company today show that support available to new students has increased significantly since 1996/97. The figures show that the maximum amounts of maintenance support available for new students in 2006/07 receiving student support through the student support scheme compared to the maximum rates for students in 1996/97 were some 38 - 46% higher (depending on residency) in real terms.

The figures also show that Students from lower income families are benefiting from the new student finance system with around half of all new students receiving either a full or partial non repayable maintenance grant this year.

In welcoming the figures Higher Education Minister Bill Rammell said:
"These figures are encouraging. Interim figures for 2006/07 show, as we forecast, around half of new full time students are eligible for a full or partial non repayable grant this year which has boosted support for many students from low income families. "Figures also suggest that large numbers of new students are taking advantage of not having to pay upfront tuition fees by taking out non-means tested tuition fee loans of up to £3,000. Students and their families should be reassured by the new system and the support it offers."

"The new student finance package is designed so that everyone with the ability and desire need not be deterred from Higher Education because of concerns around the financial aspects of entering university. For many people, going to university is a life-changing experience, and the best route to a secure future which is why I am pleased to see through the figures released today that students are taking advantage of the new student finance system"
